The 2003 film Monster follows the troubled life of serial killer Aileen Wuornos. To get into character, Charlize Theron had to undergo quite a bit of makeup. Her glowing skin had to be dampened and made more splotchy, and her hair had to look disheveled to really portray Wuornos’s tough life.

In 2001, Tim Burton was tasked with directing the sixth installment of the Planet of the Apes series – unsurprisingly called Planet of the Apes. In the 2017 drama Darkest Hour, actor Gary Oldman played the UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill. On top of that, he reportedly used up $20,000 worth of Cuban cigars to portray the always-smoking Churchill.

In the 2011 superhero film X-Men: First Class, the actor Nicholas Hoult portrayed the genius scientist known as Hank/Beast. To get the right look, Hoult had to sit through four hours of blue makeup on top of wearing special contact lenses, a mask, a muscle suit, and some fake teeth.

Actor Graham McTavish underwent quite the makeover to play the dwarf character Dwalin in Peter Jackson’s 2012 film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The English-speaking Jones used that time to brush up on his Spanish dialogue.

In Dean Parisot’s 2020 film Bill & Ted Face the Music, the comedian and actor Anthony Carrigan played the robot character, Dennis Caleb McCoy. As you can see from the picture above, it required a lot of makeup and special suits to create the highly insecure robot sent through time to kill Bill and Ted.

Although some of her roles were easy to recognize, others, such as Ovid in 2144 Neo Seoul, were nearly impossible. No one could identify her beneath all the makeup and prosthetics.

The HBO show Game of Thrones ran for eight (very popular) seasons. The show had dozens of characters, but one of the most feared was that of the Night King. Actor Richard Brake played the role during seasons four and five. Although they both have blue eyes, that’s pretty much the extent of what they share.

The Shape of Water was Guillermo del Toro’s 2017 film telling a love story between a mute cleaner and an “Amphibian Man” held in a tank at a secret government lab. Actor Doug Jones played the “Amphibian Man” – enduring an enormous amount of makeup and prosthetics just to get into character.
