A Talk
Laci Stevens thought the school staff was joking when they called her about her five children. Suddenly, an officer appeared at her door.
With a concerned look on his face, Officer Rodriguez stood on Laci's doorstep. "Miss Stevens, may I come in? We need to talk about your children."
He Had Seen It Before
From behind Laci, Officer Rodriguez saw five faces staring at him through the crack in the door. There was a tinge of sadness in his gut as he observed the untidy house.
It was just the job he was doing, and he had seen it before. It would be nice if he didn't have to take drastic measures to protect the children.
Smelly

While trying not to make it obvious, the officer wrinkled his nose discreetly. "Mrs. Stevens, I am here to investigate complaints about the hygiene of your children from the school."

Laci's body trembled as she heard the word "investigate." Her story needed to be straightened out. The school had also called her several times, but she didn't pay much attention to them.
Her options were limited now that the police were coming to her door. There was no time to waste. She had to act immediately.
After Losing Her Husband
Ever since her husband, Philip, passed away a year ago, Laci Stevens had been a single mother. In order to take care of him, Laci had to leave her job when he became bedridden.
Laci and her five children had to basically fend for themselves after Laci's husband passed away.
Two Jobs
Laci had to come up with a plan to keep food on the table with her husband gone and bills piling up. Her first job was as a waitress at a local diner. Despite this, it wasn't enough.
As a result, she ended up working as a cleaner in a guesthouse. Having to take care of her kids as a single mother, Laci had to do everything she could to keep a roof over their heads.
Candice
While she was working, she left her eldest daughter, Candice, in charge of the house and her siblings. For Candice, things weren't always easy. Only 14 years old, she was just a teenager.
Helping her mother with household chores and making sure her younger siblings went to school put pressure on her. That's when the problems began.
Getting Ready For The Bus Every Morning
Candice was responsible for getting her siblings ready for school. The lunches were packed, and the children were on the school bus by 7:30 in the morning.
The diner's morning shift had already started by then. Laci was so busy with her two jobs that she didn't even notice what her children were doing.

It seemed, however, that Mrs. Adams' private requests to dress more tidily had gone unanswered despite her taking the boys aside.
It was the same every day. As the boys entered the classroom, they smelled worse than the day before. She was ready to take drastic measures if necessary.
The Same Problem
After she spoke to other teachers, she found out that the twins’ siblings had the same problem in their respective classes. Their teachers had tried to talk to them as well, but nothing came of it.
Mrs. Adams and her colleagues decided that they could write a letter to Mrs. Stevens and all sign it. They would then convey their concerns about the children’s hygiene or lack thereof.
No Response
Mrs. Adams handed the letter to the twins. However, when she received no response from Mrs. Stevens, she decided to do something else. The boys told her that they had given the letter to their mother but that she was very busy.
Mrs. Adams became even more concerned with this statement. Could their mother really be so busy that she wasn’t really taking proper care of her children?
Calling The Names
Mrs. Adams didn’t know what to do about the children’s hygiene anymore. It wasn’t long before the other children in the class started making fun of them and calling them all sorts of names.

After a call to the Stevens’ residence was answered by one of the children, and when she herself went to the house to find that Mrs. Stevens’ wasn’t home, Mrs. Adams had had enough. To her, it seemed like their mother was never home, and she couldn’t figure out why.

When Mrs. Adams arrived, she couldn’t contain her tears. She hated to see her students in this condition. She felt so sorry for them and more so for their mother. She was trying her best but was still coming up short.

“Why didn’t you ask for help? I would’ve done everything that I could to help you,” Mrs. Adams replied. However, when she saw the shame and embarrassment in Laci’s eyes, she knew.
“We all have our pride, and I didn’t want my children to be bullied because of what was happening at home. I just needed more time to get us out of this,” Laci said.
