A Beginner’s Guide to Wild Camping

Wild camping is all about exploring and enjoying the natural world without hurting the wildlife or the ecosystems that live there. Although it could be easy to assume that “wild” means “no rules”, this is not the case. It’s essential to prepare accordingly, so here are some simple tips to help you along.

Plan Ahead

While a big part of the excitement about wild camping is that it allows you to explore off the beaten track, you still need to plan. This means for instance checking the weather forecast before you travel to your camping destination. You will also have to make sure that the route you want to take is passable, and have a rough estimate of how long your trip will take. When you have this information, pick out two or three camping spots that fit your plan.

Check The Rules

In many countries, wild camping is as wild as it gets. This means that you can pitch your tent anywhere and enjoy the outdoors. But this isn’t the case everywhere. There are countries where you can only camp where the local council or government has permitted you to. The last thing you want is to camp on someone’s private land.

Pack The Right Equipment

Because free camping does leave you to your own devices, you need to make sure that you have packed all the right equipment. Without any camp managers or facilities to help you out, you need everything in your backpack instead. This includes equipment such as a torch, first-aid kit, penknife, cooking fuel, waterproof tent, insect repellent, and more.
