Is Netflix Putting an End to Shared Accounts?

Netflix has become a huge part of our lives. And whether you’re using your ex’s account or your sister’s best friend’s cousin’s account – chances are you’re probably not paying for Netflix. It’s safe to say that only a few people actually pay for the streaming service. While this didn't seem like an issue before, Netflix has caught on and decided to take action.

Streaming sites are paid for through a monthly subscription, but most people borrow their family’s and friends' accounts, instead of paying for their own. This is a win-lose situation for these streaming providers; more people are benefiting from their services than they are paying for them. Due to this, Netflix and Amazon are working to change policies.

A United Kingdom-based technology startup debuted brand new technology that allows streaming sites to gain more information about their clients' accounts. This technology enables them to view irregularities in their customer’s accounts, including extreme activity – which usually indicates several users.

With so many people sharing passwords, it’s safe to say that Netflix users will be upset about this reform. For those who do not live in the same house, it means they will have to start paying for their subscription. Streaming sites hope to use this new technology to keep their customers honest while profiting from an incremental income stream.
